** Contracted data transfer quota in terabytes (TB) allowed to be transmitted on a 10-gigabit Internet port in a 30-day period. What is the difference between data transfer and "Data transfer" and "Bandwidth"? "Data Transfer" is the contracted amount of data in metered terabytes allowed to be transmitted over a certain bandwidth channel (for example 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps). Bandwidth is the volume of information that can be sent over the internet connection in a measured amount of time – calculated in megabits (Mbps) or gigabits (Gbps) per second.

Tokyo Dedicated Servers - FAQ

What is a Tokyo Dedicated Server?
A "Tokyo Dedicated Server" is a physical (bare metal) or virtual computing instance housed in a data center located in the Greater Tokyo Area (also called the National Capital Region - the most populous metropolitan area in the world) that is used by a single tenant.

Both Tokyo physical and virtual dedicated servers should be able to run any Linux operating system (OS) distribution or Microsoft Windows-based OS. Dedicated servers should offer secure and private access to the computing OS environment and have on-demand configured firewalls by default. Standard security practices include using strong passwords, SSH keys, and two-factor authentication.
What is a Tokyo Dedicated Hosting Provider?
A "Tokyo Dedicated Hosting Provider" is a company that offers dedicated hosting services from data centers located in Tokyo and the Japan's National Capital Region.

Many large Tier 3 and Tier 4 facilities are owned by NTT Data Inc., Equinix, Realty, Digital Edge, Lumen, Colt, IDC Frontier, KDDI, SoftBank, PacketFabric Japan, Ada Infrastructure, and Marunouchi Direct Access, AT Tokyo, NetSXDC (SCSK Corporation) and many otehr data center providers are located in Tokyo. They enable cloud infrastructure providers to deliver application services to the entire These providers enable cloud infrastructure companies to deliver application services to the entire Tokyo metropolitan area with an average round-trip latency of 1 to 3 milliseconds.
Why use dedicated servers in Tokyo?
If you deliver content or application services to Northeast Asia, a dedicated server in Tokyo is the perfect location for hosting infrastructure.

From a network perspective, Tokyo offers low latency to China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. This means that users' requests for your hosted content and applications will experience lower round-trip delays compared to many other major Asian cloud infrastructure hubs.

Tokyo has established itself as one of the best locations to host and deliver digital services, cloud-based applications, and content throughout Northeast Asia.
Are there unlimited bandwidth dedicated servers in Tokyo?
Yes, if by "unlimited bandwidth" you mean no restrictions on incoming and outgoing Internet traffic and no charges for data transfer used. Each dedicated server in Tokyo comes with a certain virtual or physical capacity of the Internet connection port, chosen by the server user. It varies from 250 Mbps to 30 Gbps. There are no limitations or restrictions on the used bandwidth used or data transfer quotas, up to the capacity of the Internet connection port, selected by our clients. Unless otherwise stated, all Tokyo dedicated hosting services offered by HostColor feature "unlimited bandwidth up to the capacity of the Internet connection port". This is also called "unmetered bandwidth", which is actually a more accurate term.
"Unmetered Bandwidth" or "dedicated server with unmetered bandwidth" means that the hosting provider does not measure the bandwidth used by the server. In Tokyo and most of its other Edge data center locations HostColor allows its customers to use the full capacity of the physical Internet bandwidth port of their dedicated servers.
Is my Tokyo dedicated server safe from DDoS attacks?
Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks typically result in service unavailability and thousands of dollars in data transfer service fees, especially if you host your IT infrastructure with one of the major hyperscale cloud providers.
HostColor's DDoS-protected dedicated servers in Tokyo Japan minimize the risk of service unavailability and virtually eliminate the risk of you incurring data transfer costs as a result of artificial, bot-generated traffic to your server instances.
When you use our dedicated servers in Japan, your applications run behind sophisticated DDoS protection firewalls, maximizing application availability. Our natural, enterprise-grade, DDoS-protected networks safeguard your Dallas dedicated server from unexpected network downtime, preventing loss of business and revenue. Our DDoS-protected network services filter out malicious traffic and ensure that legitimate traffic requests reach your servers and applications. Specifically, our DDoS protection includes the following capabilities:
  • Real-time mitigation of malicious attacks
  • Human-generated traffic that reaches your Tokyo dedicated server
  • Native protection against network attacks of any size
  • No additional fees or charges for DoS and DDoS protected servers and infrastructure
  • No fees for bot-generated and malicious traffic on all unmetered dedicated servers and dedicated clouds in Tokyo
  • No increased latency and long round-trip delays in application delivery in the event of a network attack
  • All IPv4 and IPv6 settings are protected from DDoS attacks
Is my Tokyo Edge Dedicated Server protected against failure?
Yes! Each Edge server hosted in the 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi data center has four (4x) 25-gigabit network interfaces configured for redundancy on 2 separate NIC cards. All four interfaces are placed into a single link access group (LAG) and utilize LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol ) for individual link monitoring. Your Edge Dedicated Server is connected to two network switches with two (2x) 25-gigabit connection links to the first switch and two (2x) 25-gigabit to the second switch. Each network switch has multiple 100-gigabit fiber connections to the data center's network architecture that feature failover protection. The overall networking architecture sustains full data transfer capacity with the failure of any single networking appliance or link. The data transfer from the Edge data centers to either the public Internet or the MPLS IP VPN network is secured by two diverse routers for each network. The routers are connected to a pair of network switches. The data transfer can be forwarded through both routers and will switch over automatically upon failure of any networking device.
What defines the improved performance of a Tokyo server?
Several variables influence the performance of a Tokyo dedicated server. These include the physical location of the application users, the bandwidth rate of the internet connection port, the computing resources necessary for the installed software applications to run properly, and how the apps are installed and configured.

An important trend in cloud computing, particularly in dedicated server infrastructure delivery, is "edge hosting." With edge hosting, dedicated servers are physically close to users of the configured software applications. From a networking perspective, improved performance for a Tokyo dedicated server means it is an edge server with latency of less than 5 milliseconds between application users and the hosted apps.
What is the security level of my Japan Dedicated Server?
Bare Metal Servers and Dedicated Cloud Hosting infrastructure providers in Japan, and those in Tokyo in particular, offer the following levels of security with their dedicated hosting services:

1. Physical Environment Security
Physical environment security refers to all physical aspects of the Japanese data center facilities used to house bare metal servers. This includes resilience against natural disasters, the data center's physical design, and how the server rooms and cabinets are organized. It also includes power redundancy, internet network redundancy, and overall business continuity.

2. Network Security
Network security is part of the data center's overall communications architecture. It includes redundant fiber connectivity routes and a wide selection of ISPs and interconnection options.

3. Physical Server Security
This can also be referred to as "Bare Metal Server Security". It refers to the specific hardware components and configurations of the server that increase its uptime. These include the number of power supplies (PSUs), the number and capacity of network interface cards (NICs), the type of hard drives used (SATA, SAS, SSD, NVMe, etc.), RAID controllers, and the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI)—also known as ILO or iDrac—which provides remote network access to Tokyo-based servers. IPMI provides remote network access to Tokyo-based servers.

As a provider of Tokyo Bare Metal Servers, HC automatically adheres to the highest industry standards regarding physical environment security and network security. Physical server security is a customizable element of dedicated hosting servers selected by users (i.e., customers).
Most of our dedicated servers in Tokyo include the following "Physical Server Security" features by default:
  • Redundant Power Supplies (PSUs)
  • At least two 1 Gbps physical Network Interface Cards (NICs)
  • Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and IPMI capabilities, except for the HostColor's Linux-based Edge servers. These Edge servers only provide SSH management access and cannot be recovered in the event of an operating system (OS) failure that renders the server inoperable.
Do HC's Tokyo dedicated servers come with a firewall?
The type of firewall depends on the operating system used on your Tokyo dedicated server. If your server uses a Linux operating system, one of the most popular firewall choices is Iptables.

Iptables is a user-space utility in Linux used to configure and manage the Netfilter firewall. Netfilter itself is a packet filter and firewall implemented in the standard Linux kernel. It allows administrators to control network traffic by defining rules for filtering, translating, and altering packets.

Other popular software firewall choices include Firewalld, IPFire, OPNsense, and pfSense, as well as underlying tools such as Iptables, Nftables, and UFW. IPFire, OPNsense, and pfSense are open-source firewall distributions.

Firewalld is a firewall management tool used by Red Hat Linux operating systems, including AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. It provides firewall features by acting as a front end for the Linux kernel's Netfilter framework. The current default backend for Firewalld is Nftables.

If your Tokyo dedicated server is installed with the Ubuntu operating system (OS), you can use the UFW firewall. One benefit of UFW is that it offers command-line and graphical (Gufw) interfaces that are easier to understand and use than interacting directly with Iptables.

The Windows Defender Firewall is the most popular firewall for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Other widely used software firewalls for the Windows OS include ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, GlassWire, TinyWall, and Comodo Firewall. Many other software firewalls are also sold under commercial licenses on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) basis.
Is business continuity possible on my Tokyo Dedicated Server?
Yes, you can do this using virtualization technology such as Proxmox VE. Proxmox provides a software stack called the HA Manager that automatically detects failures and provides automatic failover.

The Proxmox VE HA Manager acts as an "automated" administrator. After resources (VMs, containers, etc.) are configured, the HA Manager monitors them for proper functionality and handles service failover to a redundant Tokyo-based server in case of failure or downtime. The HA manager can also handle normal user requests to start, stop, move, and migrate a service.

But it's not just Proxmox VE. There are many other technologies that enable the use of two or more physical servers to provide business continuity for IT infrastructure and hosted applications. Microsoft Windows Hyper V also allows server owners to create a high availability cluster.
Can I have a dedicated cloud infrastructure in Tokyo?
You can use your preferred cloud computing virtualization technology to create and deploy a dedicated cloud infrastructure on a single bare metal server or a cluster of servers. If you want to use two dedicated bare metal servers, they can be directly interconnected using 1GE or 10GE NIC cards. If you need HostColor's help to create a cloud computing architecture, we can help you design one, deploy it, and manage it as needed.
Servers hosted at 2-2-43 Higashishinagawa, Shinagawa City data center and all Equinix data centers in Tokyo can use Proxmox VE, VMware ESXi, Linux Containers, VirtualBox, OpenVZ, Microsoft Hyper-V, Kubernetes, Docker, or other virtualization platforms.
Edge bare-metal servers hosted at 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda data center can use the Ubuntu operating system with Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) virtualization technology in Ubuntu 20 (or Ubuntu 22) OS.
Can I host Docker and Kubernetes containers in Tokyo?
Yes. You can create and host dedicated cloud infrastructure based on Docker and Kubernetes in Tokyo data centers and host containerized applications on it.

HostColor's Tokyo, Japan bare metal and cloud infrastructure allows organizations to deploy run, scale up, scale down, and quickly move Docker containers and the containerized applications from one virtual containerized environment to another without interruption. Docker containers are executable software packages that contain everything needed to run an application: code, runtime, system tools, system libraries, and settings.

HC also enables enterprises to deploy a fully isolated, dedicated cloud infrastructure for hosting and orchestrating containerized applications, based on the Kubernetes open source platform for managing containerized workloads and services.
What does a Semi Managed Tokyo Dedicated Server mean?
While most dedicated hosting providers offer "Unmanaged" or "Managed" hosting services, HostColor does "Semi-Managed" and "Managed" Dedicated Servers in Tokyo, Japan.

"Unmanaged" means that the client is solely responsible for the management of the bare-metal dedicated server they have. The provider's responsibility is to make sure that the server network connection works properly and in case of a hardware failure, to fix the failed components, or to replace the whole physical server.

"Managed" means that the provider is responsible for managing the network, the physical server, the installed operating system, and the software environment. The provider does operating system updates, software updates, and other management and configuration tasks on the physical server. In other words unmanaged dedicated servers do not feature server-side support and therefore the clients pay for the base infrastructure service. The 'Managed Dedicated Servers' feature full server-side infrastructure, OS, and software environment support and therefore are more expensive, as the provider's experts commit time and work hours to deliver technical and system administration.

HostColor fills the gap by offering "Semi-Managed" Dedicated Servers. "Semi-Managed" means that our administrators install your preferred OS on the physical server in Tokyo or your preferred virtualization platform to transform the physical server into a Cloud infrastructure. We create a custom technology environment per your requirements and keep on record a description with the 'base desired state' of your Japanese server. As a part of the "Semi-Managed" support contract, HostColor reinstalls the server OS per the request and helps the client fix issues and troubleshoot in case of any operating system, networking, or software configuration issues. All "Semi-Managed" Tokyo dedicated servers feature up to 30 minutes per month of technical and system administration. Any time spent by HC experts on managing the server OS, software environments, or troubleshooting will be charged at HostColor's standard managed service rates.
Is there technical support available for my server in Tokyo?
All HostColor dedicated servers in Tokyo come with "Free Infrastructure Support". HostColor never charges you for access to infrastructure technical support. Unlike the large hyperscale clouds like AWS, Azure and others, that charge their customers for access to technical support for their bare-metal or cloud infrastructure.
Our infrastructure technical support covers everything related to network interfaces and the core functionality of the physical components of your Tokyo bare-metal dedicated server such as CPU, RAM, and storage drives. With our free infrastructure support, you can save money and have access to the technical support you need for the core components and network functions of your Tokyo server.
Please note that the "Free Infrastructure Support" does not include support for the operating system (OS), any custom configurations created and maintained by the customer, and the installed software applications.
In addition to the "Free Infrastructure Support" HostColor takes the dedicated hosting services it provides to a new level of reliability with its "Semi-Managed Dedicated Servers" support.

Does "dedicated server" mean "dedicated resources"?
Yes, it means that the computing resources of your Tokyo bare metal or virtual dedicated server — such as the processor (CPU), memory (RAM), storage, and interconnection interfaces — are exclusively allocated to a single user and are not shared.
Do Tokyo dedicated servers feature resource redundancy?
Not necessarily. The level of redundancy offered by a hardware-defined dedicated server (also known as a Bare Metal server) depends on the user's custom requirements. Physical-level redundancy may include two or more power supply units, two or more processors, and various storage redundancy options through Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID). It may also include the use of multiple network interface cards (NICs), among other features.

Providers deliver dedicated servers with the hardware redundancy level chosen and customized by users, who have full control over it.
Are Tokyo dedicated server resources scalable?
The computing resources provided as part of the Tokyo Dedicated Hosting service - processing power (CPU), random access memory (RAM), storage capacity used by the IT environment and applications configured on the bare metal server, the amount of data transferred, and the overall network bandwidth rate - can be scaled up to the physical limits of the physical processor, RAM, storage drive(s), and network interface cards (NICs) of the selected hardware configuration.

Depending on the selected physical server system, RAM can be upgraded to the maximum amount supported by the server motherboard. For some Tokyo Dedicated Servers, storage drives (HDD, SATA, SAS, SSD, or NMVe) can be upgraded without powering down the physical machine. Increasing network bandwidth quotas may require powering down the server and adding additional NIC cards.
Can I upgrade the RAM on my Tokyo Dedicated Server?
Yes, RAM upgrades vary depending on the processor model, motherboard, and hardware configuration selected.

Tokyo Dedicated Server configurations listed with 16GB or 32GB of RAM are typically upgradeable to 64GB of RAM.

All servers listed with 32 GB of RAM or 64 GB of RAM are typically upgradeable to 128 GB of RAM, and in some cases to 256 GB of RAM.

Servers listed with 128 GB RAM can be upgraded to 512 GB RAM or even 1024 GB RAM.
Can I upgrade the data storage capacity of my Tokyo Server?
This depends on the hardware configuration of your dedicated server in Tokyo. If you feel that you need to increase the amount of storage you are using, we suggest that you speak to the HC team about the possibility of leasing a server that has spare HDD bays that can be upgraded with the storage of your choice.

In general, all dedicated servers in Tokyo that are provisioned with one (1x) storage drive - either NMVe, SSD or HDD - can be upgraded.

The first three IP addresses are used for the networking service of your server as follows: 1st IP address is for the router default gateway; 2nd IP address is reserved for router1; 3rd IP is reserved for router2. The 4th IP address is the main IP of your Edge Dedicated Server. Any additional IP addresses can be ordered from Accounts.HostColor.com and can be used for various services on your server.
How does HostColor bill my Tokyo Dedicated Server?
Once payment is made, the billing month for your Semi-Managed Tokyo Dedicated Server starts from the moment we send you the login credentials. By default, all Tokyo dedicated hosting services are set to month-to-month contracts to provide maximum flexibility.
You can choose between month-to-month, 3-month, 6-month, and annual contracts. If you opt for an annual contract, you will receive a lower monthly service fee. However, you will need to prepay the full contract (all 12 service fees). Please note that your Tokyo Server on a month-to-month contract must be canceled properly and terminated before we stop billing you. The Tokyo-based Edge servers, like other dedicated hosting services, require a 30-day cancellation notice. In some cases, we may allow early cancellations. To qualify for an early cancellation, you must submit a cancellation request from your Account 5 business days before the beginning of the new billing cycle.

Why Use Our Tokyo Dedicated Servers?

HostColor provides semi-managed bare metal servers and dedicated hosting services in Japan from data centers located at 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda, Equinix TY2 at 3 Chome-8-21 Higashishinagawa, and Equinix TY2 at 2-2-43 Higashishinagawa, Shinagawa City in Tokyo. In Japan, we utilize our local partners' NOCs and our own IPv4 & IPv6 networks to design and deliver network services for the public and private dedicated cloud infrastructures used by our customers. Use our Tokyo dedicated servers to create a cloud infrastructure and securely host your company's internal workflows or deliver application services to your customers. HostColor does not charge you for the gigabytes or terabytes of data transfer you use, and saves you thousands of dollars per month by allowing you to use an allocated bandwidth quota that varies from 250 Mbps to 100 Gbps. There are a few things to consider when customizing your cloud-ready Tokyo dedicated server:
Bandwidth & Data Transfer

Bandwidth & Data Transfer

HC delivers dedicated servers in Tokyo measured by the allocated "Bandwidth" quota (in Mbps or Gbps) and servers that are measured by the transmitted "Data Transfer" (in terabytes). Most of our Dedicated Servers in Tokyo are measured by the allocated bandwidth and feature a fixed bandwidth rate between 250 Mbps and 100 Gbps. The clients of those servers never pay for the used data transfer in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). HostColor's Tokyo-hosted servers, measured by the allocated "Bandwidth" and all Unmetered Servers save our customers between a couple of thousands and tens of thousands of dollars on an annual basis.
Linux-based Edge Server

Linux or Microsoft Windows Servers in Tokyo

Our high-bandwidth, unmetered Edge servers hosted in the 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda data center in Tokyo are Linux-based. Available Linux OS distributions include Ubuntu 20 or 22, RockyLinux 8 or 9, Debian 12, and RedHat versions 7.9, 8.5, and 9.3. Microsoft Windows OS can be used on virtual machines with Ubuntu as the underlying OS and Virtual Machine Manager (VMM).
All other dedicated servers can be used with any Linux distribution, a Microsoft Windows OS, or virtualization technologies such as Proxmox VE and VMware ESXi, etc.
Server Access & Management

Tokyo Dedicated Server Access & Management

Our bare-metal Edge servers in Tokyo, hosted at the 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda data center are managed using Secure Socket Shell (SSH). Authorized users can remotely access the Edge server using access credentials called SSH keys. We do not provide an IPMI/ILO/IDRAC remote interface for remote server management.
All other dedicated server configurations in Tokyo come with PMI/ILO/IDRAC remote server management interfaces, unless other specified.
Business Continuity

Business Continuity Scenario Add-on

If your Tokyo Edge server hosted at the 2 Chome-3-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda data center becomes unavailable due to an operating system (OS) crash or other failure, HostColor will not be able to troubleshoot the OS via IPMI/ILO/IDRAC. In such a case, HostColor will provide you with a new replacement server. It is therefore essential to have a fully functional and operational backup copy of your data and applications or a business continuity scenario in place. HostColor can provide you with a dedicated purpose-built DR and Business Continuity infrastructure at a low recurring monthly cost.
All other Tokyo dedicated servers come with an IPMI/ILO/IDRAC remote management interface (unless otherwise specified in the server order).
