Domain Name, Top-Level Domain, DNS
Accordind to Wikipedia "Domain name" refers to a "collection of network devices that belong to a domain which is managed according to some common property of the members or within a common administrative boundary". The term is used to describe the areas of administrative authority within the WWW Domain name system (DNS zone). The main purpose of domain names is be a mechanism for naming resources in such a way that the names are usable in different hosts, networks, protocol families, and etc. Domain names are useful for a local agent (called a resolver) when it has to retrieve information associated with the domain name. People use Domain names (or Domains) for identification, reference, or to access a web server, or resource on the server. Domain names are part of Uniform Resource Locators (URL) of the websites, e.g. www.hostcolor.com, in e-mail addresses, or as a part of a syntax that describes an access method to a web server or device in any IP network. Top-level Domain Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the last part of an Internet domain name, the one after the final dot of any Domain name. For example, if we have WWW (Word Wide Web), then dot, then HostColor, an .com at the end - www.hostcolor.com - this is .com TLD. The administration of top-level domains is delegated to "Domain registars" by the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). It operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and is in charge of the management of DNS root zone. DNS The web's DNS (Domain Name System) allows reference to websites by using Domain names (such as www.hostcolor.com) rather than using the numeric IP addresses (206.212.247.141) that indicate each web server connected to Internet. All domain names consist of characters separated by dots. The Domain Name System stores the list of mail servers that accept email for any domain. It provides WWW with keyword-based redirection service. The DNS forms an hierarchy. Each TLD like ".com" includes millions of Second-Level Domains (such as "hostcolor" in web address "www.hostcolor.org"). Any of those second-level domain can include a number of third-level domains , such as "blog" in blog.hostcolor.com. |
